Bangkok from some americans' perspective.
โดยคุณ : Andy
Hi! everybody.

How are you guys doing ? Besides, you guys may feel too warm in mind for studying hard to pass the NCLEX, the weather in BKK this April must be hot, hotter and hottest. It reminds me about tropical fruits which flourish at this time.

In order to lower the temperature in your mind and outside your body, i have something be proud of to share with.

Last month, there was a traveling column in Los Angeles Time posting " Affordably look alike paradise in Asia" There were 4-5 stars hotels which are located in BKK near by the Chaupraya River such as Oriental, Shangrila and ect. The picture of the hotels, The river, temples, the highlight The temple of dawn and the comparative price were posted in that column.

Actually, I did not find this column myself, at that week I went traveling. When I went back to work, my co-worker gave the news paper to me and told me that the nursing director( she is original from Nebraska which is cold and quite quiet. there are mostly white) kept this column for me. She is very excited and looking forward to visiting Thailand and also other co-workers are eager and can't wait to take vacation to visit Thailand.

This is kind of talk of the town in the hospital after i adding detailed informations such as the Grand Palace. Canals tour, real floating markets and fabulous street food vendors with the cheap price of noodles and authentic padthai.

you know what I gave them a goose bumps in particular when I told them about the price of the foods. everyone look at me like I am telling unbelievable story. Many staffs are very curious and keep asking me that is a real bangkok the we live in or that is a real picture from Thailand. It is too good to be true.

I don't distort or brag around about our country, right? The point that make them amazed are $700 - 1400 for airfare, 100-200 a night for spending a good time staying at fancy hotels next to the Chaupraya River, less than $ 1 for street foods. This is affordable and a steal for typical american who get $8.7 per hour minimum wage.

I have another story that i consider it is very cute and make me laugh. There is a young smart cutety doctor. Every time he see me he "wai" me and talk me ear off how he is crazy about Thai boxing.
I quite sure he would like to tell me that he is crazy about a Thai lady but he is too shy to ask talk about. Anyhow, I hope that he can meet a Thai girl that match with him. Who is interested in please show me your hand? I'm just kidding.

More importantly, yesterday, the director came to and brought me a good news . she have just hired a Thai lady nurse who just passed the NCLEX a few weeks ago. She told me that she was impressed by the nurse's personality such as the way she talks, smile and bla bla bla. The director said that she felt that "Thai people are very sweet" For me , I think this is the way we, mostly Thai people are. We smile, we are shy and humble but we are smart that make us win people's heart easily.

The story is the nurse has just passed the NCLEX and has not gotten the paper license yet. She knew that there are a few Thai nurses working at this hospital from the pro nurse web board. she called me while i was working at the hospital in the morning and wanted to see the hospital and say hi to me. I advised her that she should prepare her resume' and other documents takeing it with her just in case she like the hospital andwant to leave application at the human resource.

At the afternoon, I asked the director that was she willing to hire a Thai nurse who has just immigrated to the US a few mont and just passed The NCLEX a last wee? The director said she would like to see the nurse right away. After talking with the Thai nurse, the hospital offered her a job right away and the director said that " I can not let her go, she is very nice and sweet she must stick with us forever Ha Ha Ha Ha" I think she just kidding.

By the way, the nurse gonna start working in ICU with me in next 2 week after getting ACLS certificate. (Working in some units, you must have certain certificates. This is mandatory by law). The director asked me to help her to learn how to work at new place but be careful about talking in Thai.

i have no prejudice or stereotype, I just feel that we are Thai,we have something attractive to other people. For example, at my workplace some doctors like to get mad to nurses who are always lazy or reckless.(I see sometimes they yells to each others , they suppose not to do that but they did)
One day, it was my turn, I forgot to carried out order , it was my fault, I did not to say that I was busy. The doctor got mad and raised his voice ( i think he was yelling at me) i did not know how to yell back in English or how to explain in English so the best that i did that time was giving him a big smile and kept nodding my head. you know what he stopped yelling and talked to me slowly an clearly.
Later on, he never got mad with me again he just explain and write down orders clearly. The following day, he asked me " you are not Phillipino do you? When i told him that I am Thai, he said "I see" and change the topic talking about Samui, Samet, Phukhet instead. May be we are look alike except my Thai accent English.

I am optimistic that this is funny and a good side that I have not commanded English yet. if I could command English and yelled back may me I were fired and lost my job.

OK, I just want to share, Hopefully, my story will make your hot and humid day in Thailand is a good day more or less.

bye for now

Andy

Just curious,

As retrogression has not been lifted since July 07. Nobody can file I-485 (green card) in EB3 category. They can not get work permit as well. So how she can work with just having Nclex passing. I have a couple friends who passed Nclex and has been living in USA and stucking to file immigration. If she can get a job. please let me know. I would inform my friends to apply a job too.

Dear Andy.
I agree with everything that you wrote. The articles you wrote here are very useful for all readers. I myself have a very poor English but I try to practice English especially conversation so I can use it at work. I believe that English is very important here because I need it to communicate with patients, doctors, co-workers, and others. I have to confess you that I have someone helps correcting my writing before I post it here. Happy Thailand New Year 2008.

To Andy,

I really surprise too. It is impossible who just passed Nclex to get a job in retrogression period. Beside she married with citizen. Please tell us how she did get a job and what status she has been holding.

Regards,

A Nurse.

Dear, all
I am sorry that I did not go to detailed information regarding the Thai nurse status because It is too personal . Anyhow to prevent everybody from being confused I have to give you in detail. She doesn't need working permit because she got Green card from marriage so she can apply the job right away after passing NCLEX.

For you guys who have been waiting for EB3 available on pins and needles. I keep my finger cross. In the mean time, I hope that you guys keep practicing English to get yourself ready to work in English speaking workplace.

If you have NCLEX, Work permit or Green card and you can communicate with an interviewer you can get a job in LA right away. However, if you want to gain experiences from working in small hospital but have exceptional training programs like us please let me know.

Hopefully, I did answer the question. If you guys have other questions please post in here.

Have a good weekend.

Andy

Your welcome, Pauline
I feel good every time I here that there are Thai nurses enthuse to work as a RN over here and I strongly believe that they are absolutely able to do it. Many Thai nurses have proved that they have capable of working as a nurse in the US. Not only are they good at working but they gain reputation in being compassionate also.
So guys, stop asking yourselves or someone else but study English classes seriously and go get it.
Cheer!
Andy
