Overseas Nursing Programme The Overseas Nursing Programme (ONP) is the standard training set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) that all applicants trained outside the EU must complete.
All applicants who apply for nurse registration and who meet NMC minimum requirements will be required to undertake all or part of the ONP.
The ONP sets out common entry standards, a compulsory 20-day period of protected learning for all nurses trained outside the European Economic Area (EEA) and, where appropriate, a period of supervised practice. Every applicant will have to pass the specified International English language test (IELTS) before they can apply to go onto the ONP.
Only approved educational institutions are permitted to provide the new programme. A list of ONPs are available on the NMC website at: www.nmc-uk.org
International English Language Test (IELTS) All overseas nurses who trained outside the European Economic Area (EEA) will have to sit the International English Language Test (IELTS).
From the 1 February 2007 the following scores have to be achieved by all nurses and midwives:
